What the Panel Measures
-
Testosterone
The principal male sex hormone, involved in energy, muscle strength and recovery, mood, bone health and libido. Levels naturally decline with age, and they vary through the day, which is why the timing of a sample matters. -
Free testosterone and free androgen index
Not all circulating testosterone is available for the body to use. These measures give an indication of how much is biologically active, which can be more informative than the total figure alone. -
Sex hormone binding globulin
SHBG binds to testosterone in the bloodstream and governs how much reaches your tissues. It provides important context when interpreting a testosterone result. -
Albumin
Albumin is a protein in the blood that, like SHBG, binds to testosterone as it circulates. Measuring it helps build an accurate picture of how much testosterone is actually available for your body to use. -
Luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone
These two hormones are produced in the brain and regulate the work of the testes. Measured alongside testosterone, they help indicate where in the system a change may be arising. -
Prolactin
Prolactin is worth measuring because raised levels can affect the production of other hormones.d with movement, exercise and rehabilitation to help patients return to sport, training and everyday activity.

Who Might Consider This Test
Men choose hormone testing for a range of reasons. It may be of interest if you have noticed:
- Persistent tiredness or low energy
- A reduction in libido
- Difficulty building or maintaining muscle
- Reduced strength or slower recovery after exercise
- Changes in mood or motivation
- Unexplained changes in weight
- A general sense that something has shifted
Some men simply want a clearer picture of their health rather than an answer to a specific worry, and that is a perfectly good reason to test.
Service
How the Test Works
- Book your appointment at the clinic.
- Provide a finger prick blood sample.
- Your sample is analysed at the laboratory.
- You receive a written report explaining each hormone level and whether anything warrants further discussion.
Joyce talks you through your traffic light results and what each marker means in plain language. Where a result falls outside the normal range, you will be advised to follow it up with your GP, who can decide whether any further investigation is needed.
For the most reliable result, a morning sample is preferred, as testosterone levels are naturally higher earlier in the day. Joyce will advise you on timing when you book.
Price: the male hormone test is £55.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions
Can low testosterone explain how I feel?
It can contribute to tiredness, reduced motivation, lower libido and difficulty maintaining muscle. That said, plenty of other conditions produce the same picture, so a low reading is a prompt for further discussion rather than an answer in itself.
Is this a diagnostic test?
No. It reports your hormone levels against expected ranges. Diagnosis is a matter for a doctor, who will consider your results alongside your history, examination and any further investigation.
What if a result comes back outside the range?
You will be encouraged to discuss it with your GP or an appropriate specialist, who can decide whether anything further is needed.
