What the Essential Health Check Measures
Eighteen markers are examined across four areas of your health.
-
Heart and cholesterol health
Cardiovascular markers help build a picture of your risk of heart disease and stroke, and give you a baseline against which lifestyle changes can be measured. This section covers total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, non HDL and VLDL cholesterol, triglycerides and your cholesterol ratio. -
Liver health
Your liver quietly carries out hundreds of tasks, from filtering waste to supporting digestion, and it often does so without complaint until a problem is well established. The panel examines ALT, ALP, GGT, albumin, globulin, total protein and bilirubin, which together can indicate that the liver is under strain. -
Vitamin and nutritional health
Deficiencies in a handful of key nutrients are surprisingly common, and they can quietly contribute to tiredness, low mood, poor concentration and a weakened immune response. Vitamin D, vitamin B12 and ferritin, which reflects your iron stores, are all measured. -
Metabolic health
The check also includes markers linked to how your body processes and stores energy, adding useful context to the results above. The eighteen markers span cholesterol and triglycerides, liver function, vitamin D, iron (including ferritin) and vitamin B12, giving a rounded view across heart, liver and nutritional health.

Service
How the Test Works
- Book a short appointment at the clinic.
- Provide a small blood sample, collected with a simple finger prick. Fasting is not usually required unless you are told otherwise.
- Your sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis.
- You receive a written report setting out each marker, whether it falls within the expected range, and what that may indicate.
Joyce talks you through your traffic light results and explains what each marker means for you. Where a result falls outside the normal range, you will be advised to follow it up with your GP.
Price: the Essential Health Check is £55.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this test a diagnosis?
No. It is a screening test that provides information about a set of health markers. It is not designed to diagnose a medical condition, and any result falling outside the expected range should be discussed with your GP or another appropriate professional.
Will I need to fast beforehand?
In most cases no fasting is needed. If your circumstances mean fasting would give a more reliable result, you will be told when you book.
Does the finger prick hurt?
Only a small sample is needed, so the procedure is quick and most people find the discomfort very minor and short lived.
What happens if something looks abnormal?
You will be advised to follow it up with your GP or another suitable healthcare professional. A single marker outside the range is common and often turns out to be unimportant, but it deserves a proper look rather than a guess.
